Reese Coupler Lock for Travel Trailers | Product Review | Trailer Lock

What Is a Trailer Hitch Lock?

A trailer hitch lock is a lock for trailers. When you unhitch your trailer, this lock can protect it. Some locks secure your trailer to your tow vehicle, so theft can’t occur when you’re away.

Types of Locks

You have your choice of a couple of locks. Let’s take a closer look at each.

Coupler Locks

Use coupler locks after unhitching your trailer. These locks make it impossible for anyone else to hook your trailer up to their hitch.

Receiver Locks

Use a receiver lock when your trailer is attached to your tow vehicle. A receiver lock is used in place of a hitch pin to connect your trailer and tow vehicle, making it impossible for someone to remove your trailer without the key to the lock.

The Master Lock trailer hitch lock is the lock I trust the most to use for my RV. I love how they built this lock, as its stainless steel construction makes for an extremely durable item that will help protect my trailer in the long run. It is also extremely versatile as it is capable of fitting Class I to IV joints, which makes it perfect for my Class III process.

The Reese product and others like it can be cut off with an angle grinder. Not so with the Amplock, which is not cheap but certainly much less expensive than replacing a travel trailer. Also, we use a coupler lock (see below), though I also like the Master Lock version you posted--it's similar to the lockable hitch pin we use.

All the locks in this article may deter an 'honest' person. But someone out to get your rig would take only seconds to defeat such locks with only a simple large crow-bar. If you want to have the next guys rig stolen instead of yours, I suggest you get with Provenlocks.com gear. It's expensive, but every other trailer in the storage lot will be gone before this one is defeated.
