Body Wipes for Camping: Ew or Awesome?

After a few days camping, you might feel like you’re layered in sweat, sunscreen, and dirt. Body wipes for camping are the perfect tool to quickly freshen up, especially when you’re not camping near water or feeling a little questionable about the water’s cleanliness. Whatever the case may be, body wipes can be helpful in any situation sans shower – but would you use them? We took a closer look to find out!

Do Body Wipes for Camping Really Work?

As long as you’re patient and thorough, body wipes can offer a complete cleaning. These wipes tend to be larger than the standard baby wipe, so you can clean more with less. While a shower is faster and probably more satisfying, wipes will do the trick when you have minimal access to clean water.

Even if you do have access to water, you need to bathe at least 200 feet from your campsite and the water source to avoid contaminating your camp or the water. Using a body wipe takes away that need.

When shopping for body wipes for camping, you’ll want to look for wipes that are:

  • Alcohol-free – If you have sensitive skin, you will want to avoid wipes with alcohol in them. These can irritate your skin or dry it out.
  • All-natural – Harsh chemicals can impact your skin and the environment. Look for wipes that are free of any additives or chemicals.
  • Fragrance-free – Fragrances can attract bugs and other wildlife when out in nature. They can also irritate your skin. Try to find a neutral-scented body wipe.
  • Biodegradable – How you dispose of your body wipes matters. Biodegradable wipes ensure they won’t harm the environment you’re camping in.

Taking these things into account will make using body wipes a more enjoyable experience while camping.

How To Dispose of Body Wipes While Camping

It’s important to know how to properly dispose of your body wipes while camping. Biodegradable wipes can often be safely buried in the soil, preferably in a location away from water sources to prevent contamination. Burying biodegradable wipes allows them to break down naturally over time, returning nutrients to the soil. However, it’s essential to ensure that the burial site complies with local regulations and guidelines to prevent any adverse environmental effects.

If the wipes you are using are not biodegradable, store them in a sealed bag until you can return home and properly dispose of them in a garbage can. It’s crucial to dispose of non-biodegradable wipes properly in waste bins or through designated waste management systems to minimize their impact on the environment.

Are Body Wipes for Camping Gross or Great?

When you’re stewing in several layers of sweat and dirt, anything is better than nothing. And while trading a shower for a body wipe might seem like you’re just rubbing the dirt around instead of actually cleaning it off, having that tingly fresh feeling after scrubbing your skin will hopefully leave you satisfied… at least for a few days.

When days of grime leave you questioning your love for the outdoors, just use a wipe. Body wipes can prevent you from having to cut your camping time short to find a real shower. And sure, eventually, you’ll want a nice hot shower… but until then, wipe yourself down and go enjoy another sunrise hike.

I always bring at least one full package of wipes and use them at least once daily, unless we are heading to a shower. The wipes make it tolerable to be out and about while feeling fresh even when there are no shower facilities. I also bring baking soda to use for dry shampoo. When showering, the baking soda rinses out nicely and my hair and scalp feel extra clean.

Before we got into RVing we took a 10 day trip on a catamaran around Grenada and the grenadines. Water was a commodity on the boat. We learned that wipes were essential. So we transferred that knowledge to our RV experiences. Allows us to clean up and feel less funky when we are boondocking and conserving. So yes for body wipes.
