The History of Cassadaga, FL

Cassadaga was formed in the late 1800s by George P. Colby. Colby was a spiritualist and a trance medium from New York who would travel the country doing seances and readings. During one particular seance, Colby encountered an Indigenous American spirit called Seneca. The spirit revealed to Colby the need to build a spiritual retreat.

In late 1875, George Colby and his family arrived in Jacksonville and began to search for the promised land foretold by Seneca. The family established their homestead on almost one hundred acres on what is now Lake Colby.

The homestead eventually became Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp and became a destination for international spiritualists. The Cassadaga Hotel was built in 1922 to house the growing number of visitors to the camp.

George Colby died in 1933, and the camp sold the Cassadaga Hotel. The hotel is still open today, where it and other supernatural services operate for those looking to connect with the spirit world.
