Native American tribes like the Karankawa once called this area home, leaving traces of their existence in the form of midden and artifacts. Spanish colonizers left their mark as well before the area was passed into the hands of Mexican control.

Despite passing between various hands, generally, Padre Island National Season has remained underdeveloped. However, before its National Seashore designation in 1962, it was a bombing range for the Navy in World War II. The natural state of the area allows visitors to travel back in time. With extensive interpretive programs and exhibits, visitors can learn more about the unique history of Padre Island during their visit.

Do You Have to Pay to Visit Padre Island National Seashore?

Padre Island National Seashore offers an opportunity to experience relatively unspoiled nature. However, before you can rest and relax in the sun and sand, you will need to pay park entrance fees. Entrance fees contribute directly to the maintenance and conservation of the park’s resources. Access fees are usually $5/person for one day or $15/person for a week-long pass. Children 15 and under are typically free. There are additional fees for vehicles, that admit the pass holder and up to 15 passengers in the vehicle. A one-day entrance pass for vehicles is about $10/per vehicle and a week pass is roughly $25/per person.

Is It Safe to Swim at Padre Island National Seashore?

Swimming at Padre Island National Seashore is a popular activity. However, like any coastal destination, safety precautions are essential. The seashore’s beaches are generally safe for swimming, but it’s crucial to heed any advisories, warnings, or guidelines from park rangers. Padre Island does not have active lifeguards, so swimming is at your own risk. Keep an eye on weather conditions and the tide, as the currents can be unpredictable.

Things to Do at Padre Island National Seashore

If sunbathing or swimming won’t cut it during your Padre Island National Seashore adventure, the following activities might create unforgettable memories. Let’s take a closer look.

Help Sea Turtles to the Water

From mid-June through August you can help release sea turtles along Padre Island. After nesting season, hatchlings will make the 20-45-minute crawl across the beach into the water. To view the release of the baby sea turtles, you’ll usually head to Malaquite Beach in front of the visitor center at 6:45 a.m. 

Go Beachcombing

Head to Padre Island National Seashore with a bucket for the ultimate beachcombing experience. You can find seashells, sea beans (drift seeds), driftwood, other lumber, and plastics that people have lost or discarded along this National Seashore. However, please keep in mind you are only allowed to take up to a five-gallon bucket of shells from the seashore to help preserve the beach.

Go Fishing

Whether you’re an experienced or part-time angler, the diverse fishing opportunities at Padre Island are sure to delight you. Cast your line from the beach or venture into the Gulf’s deeper waters for a chance to reel in various fish species. You will need a valid Texas fishing license to fish at this National Seashore.

Try Birdwatching

Padre Island’s varied ecosystems create a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts. From waterfowl to migratory species, you can spot a wide range of birds in their natural habitats. Bring your binoculars and camera to capture the stunning diversity of avian life. During migration seasons, witness the skies and wetlands come alive with waterfowl. If your vehicle has a 4-wheel drive, you can drive along the beach to see the whole island from the shore. However, if you plan to drive during the sea turtle nesting season of April to August, you will need to be alert for nesting sea turtles crawling across the beach during the day and night.

See the Coast On the Water

Get a different perspective of Padre Island by viewing the island by sea instead of land. Rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle board to get up close and personal with the diverse marine ecosystems and see the coast.  If you want to explore the coast in a motorized boat, the only place within Padre Island National Seashore to launch a motorized boat is at the Bird Island Basin boat ramp.

Try Beach Camping

Extend your experience at Padre Island National Seashore by camping on the beach. Fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the waves and wake up to breathtaking sunrises. Please adhere to park guidelines and regulations for a safe and eco-friendly camping experience. Camping along the National Seashore is open year-round, however, primitive beach camping may close temporarily due to hazardous conditions. Ensure you have an entrance pass that covers the length of your camping trip.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Padre Island National Seashore?

The best time to visit Padre Island National Seashore largely depends on your preferences. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and prime birdwatching opportunities during migration periods. However, avoiding Padre Island during March is ideal if you want to skip the spring break crowds and chaos. Summer is popular for beach activities, but it can be hot and humid. Additionally, winter provides milder temperatures and is suitable for fishing and wildlife spotting.
