The 7 Best RV Leveling Blocks That Will Simplify Your Life

The 7 Best RV Leveling Blocks That Will Simplify Your Life

Leveling an RV on any campsite has almost become a fine art. With RV leveling blocks or block levelers, RV drivers have learned to balance their rigs within an inch of perfection. But it doesn’t come without some frustration. Couples argue via walkie-talkies about how far they should pull up on a ramp. Solo travelers struggle to continually get in and out of their vehicles to check their progress.

Oh, to have one of those fancy automatic leveling systems, where you can just push a button and voila. But if you have to set up your rig manually, you can get some great options for RV block levelers that might make the process smoother. We looked into RV leveling blocks and ramps to see how they work and which ones are the easiest to use. Here’s what we found.

What Are RV Leveling Blocks?

RV leveling blocks are stackable or plastic-formed molds that you put under the wheels to make a recreational vehicle level on sloped surfaces. You can also use them under hydraulic jacks when on soft ground to keep the jack stands from sinking into the ground.

First, you put them under each tire, raising one side until it is level. You stack the leveling blocks off-center on top of one another, so you have a slight ramp to drive on to them. Working alone can be a painstaking ordeal to stack some blocks, drive up on them, get out and see if the vehicle is level.

Then you have to get back down off the blocks and stack some more. But it is a necessary process. Working with a second person outside the vehicle can make the leveling a bit less frustrating.

Are RV Block Levelers Necessary?

Most recreational vehicles are much more comfortable to stay in when level. You don’t want to slide off the bed or have your head below your feet. But most importantly, there are mechanical aspects to your RV that require proper leveling.

For starters, you need to level your RV if you have an absorption refrigerator. Older RVs had absorption refrigerators that had to be kept level for optimum performance. They used gas flowing through coils to cool the fridge.

But the gas wouldn’t flow consistently if the unit wasn’t level. Hence, the reason most RVs need to be leveled with block levelers.

But many recreational vehicles made over the last ten years have compressor-run refrigerators like those in your home’s kitchen. They require electricity to run a compressor motor, which cools the fridge and can run at even lower temperatures than an absorption one. You don’t need to level the compressor, as it will work just as well on an incline as it does when flat.

Leveling your RV is also essential for your plumbing and gives you an accurate read on all of your water tanks. Additionally, you’ll want to level your rig to make putting the slides out much easier and protect the mechanical parts.

Buying blocks however is not necessary, you can make your own and we still fall back on the homemade wooden blocks sometimes.

How Much Weight Can Leveling Blocks Hold?

The most common leveling blocks are square plastic platforms about an inch deep. They interlock and can hold from 3,000 lbs to 10,000 lbs, depending on the brand. Some heavy-duty leveling blocks like those made by Tri-Lynx can support from 30,000 lbs to 40,000 lbs. And ramps like those made by Beechlane can hold up to 35,000 lbs.

It’s important to get the proper weight capacity blocks or you can easily shatter them under too much weight. You’ll also want to clear the area of rocks or debris that may put uneven pressure on these blocks.

Pro Tip: Not using block levelers isn’t the only reason your RV is unstable. Find out why your camper keeps rocking and how you can stop it!
